This is like a painting by

but we are going to clean it up soon.

As far a I am concerned, this is nothing less than psychic and intellectual land run of global proportions. Those who want to can now pick a territory and study it down to its tiny little pieces and know it inside and out. Anything that is not known for a fact can be filled in with well-educated guesswork (and the DW will have to keep track of how reliable the info is and do their own risk management, just like any other gambler). They can become like the Angels in Wings of Desire but as regular human being who are doing a technologically leveraged job of trying to achieve omniscience about the part of the world around them that they choose to focus on.

They will have an uncanny ability to complete your sentences for you. They will have advice at the level of a properly-trained pediatrician. Not about prescription medicine, but about safety, health-maintenance, etc. They will offer genuinely good advice that you may or may not take because they will leave you to recognize that advice as good or bad on your own. Again, their advice will be comparable to what your pediatrician will offer and it will be up to you to recognize the correctness of it. They will leave it up to you to get over the fact that you do not know the DW any better than you know an anonymous person on the Internet.

Our world is entering a New Age.

They are not row in a database, accounts to be blocked and unblocked, bits to be flicked on and off like a light switch or a data bit.
They are each a human mind. Potent and incisive. Much more complex that you realize.
Labels like "troll" are, shall we say, an over-simplification.
In this new Age, it will be harder for such minds to leave nothing behind for the next generation. There will be lessons of value from each life; all for the next generation to learn from.
The sum total of human knowledge includes the each human mind that is remembered.
The information on these BLPs will be better organized. More thoughtfully written about.

Nuclear weapons 101 in one paragraph:
In its simplest, purest form, a nuclear bomb is an intellectual matter of only one aspect: Geometry. Thought experiment: take a beaker and start to drop small marbles of HEU into it. Keep plunking more in. After a particular one, its gets warm. Add another and its gets warmer. Keep going. If you can do it fast enough, then you reach critical mass and then boom.

On the Discovery, an apparition of Bowman appears before Floyd, warning him that they must leave Jupiter within two days. Floyd asks what will happen at that time and Bowman replies, "Something wonderful." Floyd has difficulty convincing Commander Kirbuk (Helen Mirren), but then the huge black monolith suddenly disappears. A dark spot on Jupiter begins to form and starts growing. HAL's telescope observations reveal that the Great Black Spot is in fact a vast population of black monoliths, increasing in number at an exponential rate, shrinking Jupiters mass slowly with each passing minute.

The Leonov crew makes a hasty exit from Jupiter's orbit just in time to witness the swarm of monoliths fully engulf Jupiter. The monoliths eventually increase Jupiter's density to the point that the planet achieves the high temperatures and pressures necessary for nuclear fusion, becoming a small star.

Saturday I'm running wild
And all the lights are changing red to green
Moving through the crowd I'm pushing

To tell you how I really feel
Admit to some of those bad mistakes I've made

What is this that comes to pass:
Murm'ring like the distant thunder,
Crying, "Oh alas, alas."
Swell the sound, ye kings and nobles,
Priest and people, rich and poor;
Babylon is fallen to rise no more.

====start huge quote====

[It may be that Tyrell, who plays a God or Creator figure in the film, may have been forcing Deckard and Rachael to be his own personal Adam and Eve, by putting them together as the only two replicants with implanted memories.] In his low-ceilinged apartment, he remains stand-offish. To prove who she really is, she shows him a childhood photograph: "Look, it's me with my mother," to convince Deckard that she isn't a replicant. The photo shows Rachael as a young girl sitting next to her 'mother' on a porch.

And then, to affirm the results of the V-K test, Deckard recounts two examples of memory implants that have been placed in her brain - (1) a childhood game of doctor and nurse, and (2) a spider with an egg that hatched:

* a memory about 'playing doctor' - "Do you remember when you were six? You and your brother snuck into an empty building through a basement window - you were gonna play doctor. He showed you his, but when it got to be your turn, you chickened and ran. Remember that? Did you ever tell anybody that? Your mother? Tyrell? Anybody?"

* a second memory (using the audio cues from the V-K test) about hatching baby spiders eating their mothers - "You remember the spider that lived in a 'bush outside your window'? 'Orange body, green legs'? Watched her build a web all summer? Then one day, there's a big egg in it. The egg hatched…" Rachael finishes the sentence: "…and a hundred baby spiders came out. And they ate her."

In one of the most emotionally painful scenes in the film, he brutally and cruelly tells her that her memories are only implants, and that she is just a robot with emotions. Without compassion, he destroys a dream of humanness that she maintains:

Implants! Those aren't your memories. They're somebody else's. They're Tyrell's niece's. (Pause) OK, bad joke. I made a bad joke. You're not a replicant. Go home, OK? No really, I'm sorry. Go home. (Pause)

Replicants aren't supposed to be emotional, but because Rachael is 'more human than human,' tears well up in her heartbroken, watery eyes, and they liberally flow down her cheek. Her face melts after he pounds in the truth. When Deckard leaves the room to get Rachael a drink (lights turn on automatically as he enters his kitchen), she flees the apartment - devastated. As he picks up her discarded snapshot (of Tyrell's niece as a child with her mother), the shadows on the porch in the picture wave or move as if real for a moment or two, and the faint sounds of laughing children are heard. The picture of Rachael with her mother seems to briefly flicker to life.

(voice-over) Tyrell really did a job on Rachael. Right down to a snapshot of a mother she never had, a daughter she never was. Replicants weren't supposed to have feelings. Neither were blade runners. What the hell was happening to me? (As he sorts through Leon's pictures) Leon's pictures had to be as phony as Rachael's. I didn't know why a replicant would collect photos. Maybe they were like Rachael. They needed memories.

What did Wikipedia do in its time?

  • A unified namespace for a broad new vocabulary
  • Good hyper-linking, categories and a better way and Google to ask "what links here?"

Why do I keep using song and poetry or short selections of prose? Because they are cultural talismans: They are a broadened vocabulary for concepts that we simply have not yet invented jargon for yet. WP sometimes fills the gap nicely: a URL and an anchor that explains the reference. You catch up will I continue my brisk romp through this intellectual landscape and dream-world and vision that will soon have working, practical implementations.

Cultural talismans are vital in order to convey the vision succinctly and precisely and in an exciting and compelling fashion.

"For over a thousand years Roman conquerors returning from the wars enjoyed the honor of triumph, a tumultuous parade. In the procession came trumpeteers, musicians and strange animals from conquered territories, together with carts laden with treasure and captured armaments. The conquerors rode in a triumphal chariot, the dazed prisoners walking in chains before him. Sometimes his children robed in white stood with him in the chariot or rode the trace horses. A slave stood behind the conqueror holding a golden crown and whispering in his ear a warning: that all glory is fleeting."

On a skit from SNL, Dan Ackroyd plays former President Jimmy Carter on a call-in radio show interview. A current sailor in the U.S. Nuclear Navy calls in and asks how to fix some obscure component of the specific class of submarine that Carter then provides the answer to. The point of the humor: Carter was one of the most intelligent Presidents the USA ever had, but that does not make him the greatest leader. Great leaders know when to delegate such details to subordinates and not spend the effort to become a true expert. Carter did know how to delegate, such as with the attempted rescue of the hostages in Iran, but in that particular case, his generals badly let him down. Carter was the boss so it is still his fault. The DW's will only approximate true experts, but they will have a good idea of what experts or licensed professionals to refer you to (who might refer you yet again to even more narrow specialiists) when the DW's themselves know that they cannot help you directly.

We lived together for seven years on 3437 Waverley St. in Palo Alto.
Should I have left earlier? Maybe, but I do not want to just run away because I was not afraid of AIDS. Maybe that was foolhardy because Francis was too demented to be careful about hygiene. We never had physical contact, let alone intimate contact. Water over the dam…

Pierce & Stevens and the ubiquitous nature of paper coatings in our daily lives as consumers. Most packaged products we buy has coatings in the packaging. If nothing else, just to keep the ink from smearing. All magazine covers are coated to keep the ink from smearing, but not necessarily in inside pages (that is why they smug so easily).

Certificate authority private key hardware
http://www.eca.orc.com/obligations_privateKeyProtection.html

The old, 1960's standard for craftsmanship was "untouched by human hands" because the process had been automated.
The new standard: your private key is never seen by human eyes. All you do is manage the data without ever seeing it. You ave to do that for things the like private keys at Verisign because no one person can ever be trust to see the number and then never divulge or exploit that knowledge. The key point: if the human ever knows the value of the private key, they can then issue X.509 certs with or without Verisign's permission. The secrecy of the CA private key cannot be trusted to any one person. You have to build hardware that knows the value but can (to the extent possibly to engineer such security mechanisms) never show the value to human eyes.

How are the launch codes available to the U.S. President for the U.S. nuclear arsenal managed? Probably similar techniques of strict need-to-know and tamper-resistant mechanisms that tend to self-destruct rather than divulge the number.

Brazil, when Sam is just trying to order lunch:

Mr. Warrenn: There you are, your own number on your very own door. And behind that door, your very own office! Welcome to the team, DZ-015

In Kurtzmann's office (below a sign: SUSPICION BREEDS CONFIDENCE), Sam works on debugging his boss' computer problem, and learns about the Buttle/Tuttle mistake due to mismatching personnel code numbers. A reknowned terrorist (and heating engineer) named Tuttle should have been charged the costs of Information Retrieval instead of Buttle:

Kurtzmann: It keeps picking up old films. That can't be right, can it? Perhaps the machine's on the blink.
Sam: No, it's not the machine. There's a mismatch on the personnel code numbers. Tuttle should have had thirty-one pounds and six-pence debited against his account, not Buttle…Expediting has put in for electrical procedures in respect of Buttle, Archibald, shoe repair operative, but Security has invoiced Admin for Tuttle, Archibald, heating engineer.

She is greeted with a flourish by the Maitre D' Spiro (Bryan Pringle) and led to a table to have lunch with another member of the idle rich class - a bandaged-faced Mrs. Alma Terrain (Barbara Hicks) with her socially-inept daughter Shirley (Kathryn Pogson). In a scene that pokes fun at posh restaurants, they order from numbered selections on a huge menu that displays full color photographs of the various dishes. When the food is delivered, the silver covers on trays are lifted ceremoniously by the foreign-accented words of Spiro as he showily announces the identical-looking orders - pastel-colored ice cream scoops accompanied by identifying photographs:

  • Numero huite - braised veal in a wine sauce (for Ida)
  • Numero deux - duck a l'orange (for Alma)
  • Numero une - crevettes a la mayonnaise (for Shirley)
  • Steak! Numero trois! (for Sam)

The point of the humor is that people in the Dystopia of the film Brazil can no longer communicate in a sensible vocabulary: Sam must state the number rather than the name of what he wants. When you go into McDonald's for a Big Mac, you just ask for a #1 meal. (or whatever number they use at their tens of thousands of locations).

I actually worked in the Langley building, CIA HQ for a month. Fluke thermocouple temperature-sensing for overheating. I was a failure, in a sense: I had to spend my time trying to get the RS-232 communications on the VMS terminal port to operate reliably and never got around to the CRT-forms (VMS FMS, Forms Management System) work that I was supposed to do.

VMS queue jams. Deadlock detection (later Objy) Blow-ups about stuck VMS systems.

The shape of rocket engines exhaust bells. The Mach number, the speed of sound at the throat of the nozzle and the counter-intuitive speeding up of the exhaust past the throat as the nozzle widens. All by-design engineer that maximizes exhaust speed and resulting thrust-per-mass to achieve escape velocity.

Good question. Probably yes.

Did I desire some of my customers on my newsroute? Yes, but I was not so stupid as to say anything and they never got too friendly with me. Typical teen-aged raging hormones. No big surprise there, really.

Decline and Fall of Blanche DuBois

After Blanche realizes that she will not long continue to find sanctuary in Stella′s home in scene 5 her last hope is a marriage with Mitch. But even when she is waiting for him to meet her she once more is defeated by the force of her habits. A young man comes to collect newspapers while she is waiting. Blanche has no money, but she flirts with the boy and longingly kisses him on the mouth. Probably reminding herself of Mitch she says to the boy:"I′ve got to be good and keep my hands off children."

I have to wonder if Tennessee Williams delivered newspapers or talked to somebody who did so and shared their experiences and feelings with him. You see? It is not about Blanche, it is about the newsboy. In other words: the author did not create that for the Blanche character, he took real life feelings about the desire of real newsboys and used those real feelings (not expressed in the play) to add depth to the Blanche character. The scene is not-so-plausible, but it addresses the fantasies and desires of the former newsboys in the audience. Clever analysis and, for all I know, correct. That is what enables my insights: I felt those feelings. I wanted my Blanches to kiss me. They never did, but I remember the experience of my feelings. For me, that is the memory to be preserved and cherished.

One of the skills the DW will need is good, practice memory techniques. The Internet is very good, but a good DW must just keep on sucking in an integrating the data.

If you cannot master some other technique, them simply create a ridiculous association.
The key is that the new image in your head be unique and memorable (essentially, entertaining).
E.g. Need to remember some fact? Make an odd, unique cartoon in your head with the elements of the fact. Ensure that each element is essential to the image and the stranger the image the better provided that you do not let the image slip away. Really, the image need to draw an emotional repsonse out of you so that you incorporate that knowledge into your head as if your survival depended on it (that is what you brain is optimized for). Recall the feeling, the emotion, the memory and decode it. Voila. Fact retrieved from your long-term memory.
