Opera singing career
Studied with Margaret Harshaw from 1974 until her death in 1997. On October 23, 1994, Sylvester made the decision to perform the through the third act of Turandot at the San Francisco Opera, despite a rapidly deteriorating vocal condition and the readiness of his understudy to perform in his stead. What was to be the highlight of the evening, Nessun Dorma was performed in a whisper. The level of attendance in the audedience declined significantly before the cast's Turandot, Eva Marton sang her final note in her final word: "Amor!" Since then, Sylvester has displayed a higher level of professionalism and his talents have shone through until he retired from professional singing in May 2001.
